FLOWER FESTIVAL
The theme this year was "Commemoration and Celebration" which was beautifully interpreted by our very clever flower ladies, and the church looked absolutely stunning.

Sunday 11 July
Sea Sunday - Remember the Seafarers

Look around your house. How many things do you own that were made abroad? Ever wonder who brought them to you? Seafarers did - the men who work on the vast ships that ply the sea trade routes of the world. Theirs is a lonely, isolated life, spent far from home and family.

Few of us will probably ever meet a seafarer because most modern ports are situated miles away from the nearest town. Seafarers have little, and , in some countries, no time to go ashore. They, therefore, rely on the ship visiting programme that the Mission to Seafarers operates around their world.

Port chaplains, ship visitors, and volunteers provide support, friendship and a Christian witness to hundreds of thousands of seafarers every year. As the shipping industry grows and shipping patterns change the Mission to Seafarers adapts its ministry to provide assistance and meet new needs and challenges.

Over the last year, the Mission to Seafarers has visited more than 72,000 ships, welcomed more than 600,000 seafarers to its centres, visited nearly 600 seafarers in hospitals around the world and distributed 175,000 Bibles and other items of Christian literature.

As you probably known, the Mission to Seafarers is a Church of England supported charity. Locally, we send bags of knitted scarves, mittens and balaclavas, which are gratefully received and distributed to seafarers around the world.

2010 has been designated by the United Nations International Maritime Organisation as the 'Year of the Seafarer'. Two Christian organisations who work with seafarers are asking for your help in supporting them. You might organise a coffee morning to raise funds, knit some woolly hats, or simply pray for these men. Visit two websites: www.scfs.org or www.missiontoseafarers.org to find out more about what is being done - and how you can help!

Friday 16 July
Guild of Vergers

Our Verger, Sue Ansell, will be celebrating her tenth anniversary as Verger of our Parish Church. To mark this occasion we are going to have a Guild of Vergers' Service on Friday 16 July at 7.30 pm in church. All members of the parish are very warmly invited to this. Canon Maureen Palmer, Chaplain to the Guild and also one-time Canon of Guildford Cathedral, will be coming to give the sermon.

This will be a happy celebration, so why not come and support Sue on this very special occasion.

Thursday 22 July
St Mary Magdalene

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,
while it was yet dark.

Friday 23 July
Cadet 150

This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of the Army Cadet Force, and many events are being celebrated throughout the year.

On Friday 23 July we have an opportunity of welcoming to Cranleigh various members of the Cadet Force, who have entered into a cycling challenge. They will be passing through the village between 2.00 and 2.30 pm, so why not join members of the Parish Council and the Rector (the ACF Padre) to wish the participants well on their epic journey.

Monday 25 July
St James the Apostle
7.30 pm Holy Communion (CW)
As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw James and John,
and he called them; and immediately they followed Him.

Friday 3 September and
Saturday 4 September
Local Youth Matters

The Music Festival, to be held at the Cranleigh Showground on two evenings, Friday 3 and Saturday 4 September, is well into the planning stage. You may by now have seen the Star Prize of a car being raffled, and that is one prize amongst many others. The two evenings have been planned to celebrate our young people and to support their work in our local communities. Tickets are now available for these events - WHICH ARE A MUST! They can be obtained from the Church Office by the St. Nicolas Car Park.

These events are for all the family, with Friday night concentrating on less formal music compered by Diddy David Hamilton with The Overtures,
followed by 'Platinum ABBA' the world's premiere tribute band playing ABBA's greatest hits including those featured in the hit musical film Mama Mia,
plus a surprise celebrity guest!

The Saturday concert compered by Martyn Lewis features Open Air Proms with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra, and soloist Kathryn Harries.

will also be participating.

The event will finish with a spectacular firework display.
