Mothering Sunday
This very special day falls on 14 March, which is the Fourth
Sunday of Lent. It is a time when we can express our gratitude
to God for the whole concept of 'mothering', from Mother Church,
Mary, the mother of Our Lord Jesus, the Cathedral of the Holy
Spirit, the Mother Church of the Diocese, and most especially
our own mothers, to whom we can show our love through the gift
of flowers and in other tangible and generous ways.

many saints of the United Kingdom who have laid the foundation
of a strong Christian witness in the past.

Sunday
28 March
Palm Sunday
This day marks the
very beginning of Holy Week and leads us through the last days
of Jesus' life and his ministry, to the powerful and moving celebration
of the Last Supper, his betrayal and Crucifixion, and ultimately
Resurrection. Palm Sunday is filled with all the emotions of
celebration and triumph, but is also tinged with foreboding for
what is to come. Our day of celebration will begin at 10 o'clock
on the Common, near the cricket pavilion. After the Blessing
of the Palms, we process, with the donkey, towards the parish
church, singing as we go. This reminds us of that first Palm
Sunday, when Jesus entered in triumph the Holy City of Jerusalem.
He came in the spirit of humility, riding a donkey, and his message
was clear: his life was one of service and dedication to others,
but above all in obedience to God's will.
The service in the parish church will begin at 10.30 am, after
a pause at the Easter Garden. Come and join us on the Common
- this is all part of witnessing to our faith and saying to the
people of Cranleigh, 'This is what Easter is about'. Don't forget
that on this day British Summer Time begins!
Holy Week
During this week there is a daily service of Holy Communion at
12 noon, from the Book of Common Prayer, where we hear the Passion
narrative being read. It is always a powerful and moving time.
Each evening at 7.45 pm we shall have the evening prayer of Compline
and a meditation, and on the Wednesday evening, as is now traditional,
the men will sing the office of Compline.
Thursday
1 April
Maundy Thursday
Again, there will be a service at 12 noon (BCP), but in the evening
at 8.00 pm we have the Celebration of the Last Supper, the Washing
of the Feet and the Vigil.
It is worth noting that last year someone in the parish mentioned
to me that they had been to a service in London where the Washing
of the Feet took place. He was overwhelmed and deeply moved by
this experience - totally unaware that this same enactment is
played out every year in this parish of St. Nicolas. If you have
never been, then let me urge you to take part. Following the
service the altar is stripped and the church becomes bare and
empty, symbolising that everyone abandoned Jesus and left him
in a state of desolation and loss. The evening continues with
the Vigil until 10.00 pm.
Friday
2 April
Good Friday
We begin this solemn day with said Mattins in the church, and
the Litany. This is a quiet and prayerful service, as we contemplate
the significance of this awe-full day. At 9.45 am we have the
Family Devotion - a service of simplicity and beauty, as we meditate
upon the Cross. We then process out of church, joining with other
Christians in the community, to make our stand at the heart of
the village, in Stocklund Square. This moment reminds us of how
our nation has lost its understanding of this holy day, as people
go about their shopping with little regard or understanding of
what Good Friday really means. If we never try and comprehend
what this day signifies, we shall never really celebrate the
beauty and the joy of Easter Day.
