The Gift of Giving - The power of many hands

At the heart of St Nicolas Church is not just a building or a Sunday service. It’s a thriving, welcoming community—and behind everything that happens here are the people who make it all possible: our amazing volunteers.

Believe it or not, it takes 290 volunteers to keep things running smoothly each week and throughout the year. That includes everything from mowing the churchyard and making coffee, to running childrens' groups, putting on special events, arranging flowers, operating sound and visuals, and so much more.

To all of you who already give your time, energy and talents—we want to say a huge thank you. Whether you’re front and centre or working quietly in the background, your contribution matters. You are a vital part of this church family, and we are so grateful for all that you do.

Volunteering isn’t just about filling a rota or ticking off a task — It’s showing up for one another, building connections, and making a difference—often in ways you might not even realise. It reflects what we’re called to do as followers of Jesus: serve with love, and share the gifts we’ve been given. 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

That said, we know life is busy. Volunteering can sometimes feel like one more thing to add to the list. But here’s the flip side: many people find that giving a little time to help out actually adds to their life—it brings a sense of purpose, deeper friendships, and a closer connection to the church community.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved but weren’t sure where to start, now is a great time. You don’t need loads of experience—just a willing heart. Whether you’ve got a few hours a month or some regular time each week, there’s something for everyone. No matter your age, background, or skill set, there’s something you can do. And in doing so, you become part of something greater—a body of Christ working together to love, serve, and grow.

So, once again, thank you to all our wonderful volunteers. And if you’re thinking about joining in, we’d love to have you on board. Just chat to one of the churchwardens, or Nicola in the office to find out how you can get involved. We’d love to help you find your place in the team!

The Parish Giving Team was set up by the PCC and is looking at all aspects of giving at St Nicolas, not only how we can encourage generous giving, but also how we communicate the impact of that giving in many different ways.
